Development of Dairy Sector and Trade Reforms in Pakistan

Abstract

Agriculture sector is considered as backbone of Pakistan's economy categorized into its subsectors as cash crops, food crops, forestry, fisheries and livestock. Here livestock interestingly push forward the most higher output yield especially milk that sum value of output yield provided by cash and food crops both could not meet its sole worth. That's why Pakistan is ranked in the top four milk producing economies at globe. It is very right that 90% of rural population of country are dependent upon dairy sector whether being directly or indirectly involved in its supply chain management. The present study strives to highlight the significance of dairy industry of Pakistan and its trade share with partners countries of SAARC. For the purpose the period studied here is from 1990 to 2017 with an examination of major dairy products and their contribution in agricultural and national GDP. Further study analyze the impact of different phases in trade reforms via finding country's share in region. Thus this study evaluates performance of dairy sector of Pakistan in country and in regional trade.
